Becca and Jonah celebrated their dream Maine camp wedding in true rustic style at the stunning Agassiz Village in Poland Spring, Maine—a lakeside Maine wedding venue that matched their laid-back style perfectly. They wanted something outdoors and low-key, and this spot delivered without any pretense.
The couple chose Agassiz Village because it felt like the summer camps they remembered from childhood, but with better food and no mandatory canoe races :). The property sits right on the lake with plenty of pine trees and open spaces that work well for both ceremonies and receptions. It's the kind of place where you can have a Maine camp wedding without feeling like you're performing "rustic charm."
The ceremony took place under the pines on a warm summer afternoon, with about sixty of their closest people watching. No elaborate decorations needed—the setting does the work. After they said their vows, everyone moved down to the lakeside for cocktails and lawn games while the couple took photos around the property.
As their Maine wedding photographer, I appreciated how the day unfolded naturally. The light through the trees was great for portraits, and the relaxed timeline meant we could capture genuine moments instead of rushing through a shot list. Agassiz Village gives you flexibility to let the day happen organically.
Dinner was served family-style in the main lodge, then everyone moved outside as the sun started setting. They had campfires going by the water's edge—multiple fire pits so guests could spread out and actually have conversations instead of crowding around one spot. The s'mores came out around nine, because it's Maine and that's what you do at a camp-style wedding.
What worked about this Maine wedding was how it felt like an actual celebration rather than a production. Agassiz Village provided the infrastructure—good kitchen facilities, enough indoor space if weather turned, proper restrooms—while still maintaining that casual, lakeside atmosphere. The venue staff knew how to handle events without hovering over everything.
For couples considering a Maine camp wedding, Agassiz Village hits the sweet spot. It's got the authentic camp feel without the limitations that come with some more remote rustic wedding venues. Close enough to Portland for out-of-town guests, but far enough away to feel like you've escaped somewhere special.
